Caitlin Clark’s game-winning shot against the Washington Mystics probably made Sophie Cunningham feel a lot better.
On Monday, the Indiana Fever beat Washington, 78-76, in a down-to-the-wire thriller. Indiana led by as many as 17 points but saw the lead whittled to a two-point deficit with 41 seconds remaining. The Fever masterfully recovered in the waning moments with a gigantic logo 3-pointer that Clark drained with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock. Surprisingly, Clark’s timely basket was her first game-winning shot in the WNBA.

“Cotie (McMahon) almost got a fingertip on (the inbounds pass),” Clark said postgame. “It kind of worked out perfectly that she went for the steal, and honestly, probably the most wide open shot I had all night, so my hands got a little clammy, but still went in, I guess.”
If Clark’s hands were clammy, Cunningham likely had that and more.
“Stressin me (the expletive) out,” Cunningham wrote on X postgame above a photo of her and Clark celebrating the Fever’s win.
Cunningham wasn’t the only Fever player who had an animated reaction to Clark’s shot.
“Oh, my God! I kid you not, I was holding my breath because from my view, I thought Cotie (McMahon) was gonna get (the ball), and then it like slipped through,” Lexie Hull said of the game-winning play.

“We have complete confidence that it’s gonna go in, but to see it go in and put us in the lead, that was one of the biggest moments we’ve had this season. So very excited, and just for Caitlin, very happy to see it go through for her and for us. I think that’s definitely helping us continue the momentum moving forward.”
