The Texas Longhorns are having one heck of a 2027 recruiting class after adding Jason Johnson.
The Texas Longhorns continue building one of the best defensive line hauls in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Three-star defensive tackle Jason Johnson, a 6’4, 290-pound prospect out of Humble, Texas, committed to the Longhorns, choosing Texas over Cal, Vanderbilt, and LSU. Johnson is ranked the No. 42 defensive tackle in the country and the No. 60 player in the state of Texas.
“Trust in God’s plan. Longhorn Nation, I’m home. Welcome,” Johnson said upon his commitment.

Johnson has the frame to grow into an SEC role
Johnson took visits to several programs before landing on Texas. He visited SMU three times, along with single visits to Houston, Texas, Florida, LSU, and Cal. The Longhorns clearly made a strong impression in just one trip.
At his size, Johnson has a frame that suggests he can continue to add weight and develop into a true SEC interior presence. That kind of growth takes time, though. He profiles as a player who may need a redshirt year or developmental period before contributing on Saturdays. Then again, the modern game has proven that the timeline can accelerate in a hurry.

Texas’ 2027 defensive line class is shaping up to be elite
Johnson joins a defensive line group in the 2027 class that already features serious firepower. The Longhorns have four-star defensive lineman Kasi Currie, four-star edge rusher JaBarrius Garror, four-star edge rusher Cameron Hall, four-star edge rusher Derwin Fields, and four-star defensive lineman Tyler Alexander.
That’s five four-star prospects and now Johnson. That gives Texas six defensive linemen in a class currently ranked sixth in the country and third in the SEC. The depth and talent across the group are remarkable.
As the 2027 recruiting cycle inches closer to National Signing Day in February, the Longhorns’ defensive line haul has a legitimate case to finish as the best in the entire class. The combination of elite edge rushers and interior linemen gives Texas the kind of versatility that translates to dominance at the college level.
Johnson may not be the highest-ranked prospect in the group, but adding a developmental three-star with his size and upside to an already stacked class only strengthens the foundation Steve Sarkisian and his staff are building up front.
