Pro Swim Series Sacramento, Day 2 Finals: Torri Huske Wins Again in 100 Fly

Several of the world’s best swimmers were in action in their premier events Thursday evening in Sacramento, Calif., at the latest stop of USA Swimming’s Pro Swim Series. Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske was racing in the 100 butterfly, coming from behind to win her second event of the meet, and later in the session, she emerged victorious with a come-from-behind effort in the 200 freestyle.

Additionally, world champion Katharine Berkoff highlighted the 50 backstroke, while in the men’s 50 back, Ryan Murphy was aiming for a win in his first meet in almost two years.

Women’s 1500 Freestyle

Louisville’s Thilda Hall opened the session with a convincing win in the 1500 free, clocking 16:25.99 to win by more than 28 seconds over her closest competitor. The Swede cut almost two seconds from her seed time of 16:27.71. Second place went to Michaela Mattes, now representing Sandpipers of Nevada, in 16:54.41, with 15-year-old Lily Chai third in 17:14.64.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Torri Huske has earned two wins in two tries in Sacramento thanks to her 100 butterfly triumph. This one required a strong losing split as Taylor Ruck and Marie Wattel both showed more speed than Huske, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist in the event and the third-fastest performer in history at 55.52. In this final, her first since withdrawing from the event at last year’s World Championships, Huske came over the top of the field with a 30.62 closing split.

Huske finished in 57.46 to win by a half-second. Ruck placed second in 57.95 while Wattel, who won World Championships silver behind Huske in 2022, took third in 58.15. Caroline Bricker, one of Huske’s teammates at Stanford and last year’s U.S. national champion in the 200 fly, placed fourth in 58.54.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke Semifinals

The central players all advanced to the men’s 200 breast final. Spain’s Carles Coll Marti posted the top time by more than a second in the semifinal round, with the reigning short course world champion going 2:11.50. Cal’s Yamato Okadome, fresh off an NCAA title in the 200-yard breast, got second in 2:12.79, and the two Americans who swam at last year’s World Championships both advanced, with Josh Matheny fourth (2:13.44) and AJ Pouch sixth (2:13.71).

There was a tie for eighth, with Eli Martin and Grant Sanders recording identical marks of 2:14.37. That set up a potential swim-off to determine the last spot in Friday’s final.

Women’s 50 Backstroke

It was going to take a huge effort to knock off the world champion in the women’s 50 back, and no one in Sacramento was up to the task. Katharine Berkoff led the field in prelims at 27.73 and swam even faster at night, coming in at 27.41 to take down the field. Berkoff holds the world’s fastest time for 2026 with the 27.24 she swam at the Westmont Pro Series in March.

Cal’s Mary-Ambre Moluh was the only swimmer close to Berkoff, coming in at 27.80 to claim second place, with Kaitlyn Owens edging Rhyan White for third, 28.23 to 28.39.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

Ryan Murphy is a winner for the first time in his comeback to the sport. The 30-year-old winner of nine Olympic medals blasted the 50 backstroke field in Sacramento with a time of 25.17. That put Murphy two tenths ahead of a solid field and showed that his speed is quickly returning following a 22-month layoff from competition.

NC State’s Aiden Hayes had his second top-three finish of the night at 25.36, one hundredth ahead of teammate Daniel Diehl (25.37). Diehl previously edged out Murphy for the win in the 100 back Wednesday. Dylan Carter (25.44) and Michael Andrew (25.48) also produced strong showings here.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

Last year, Torri Huske qualified to represent the United States in the 800 free relay at a major meet for the first time. Her illness at the World Championships removed her from consideration in Singapore, but she showed enough to be considered a key player moving forward. Huske showed off some of that 200 free promise with a come-from-behind win in Sacramento for her third individual triumph of the meet.

Halfway through the A-final, Huske trailed teenager Kennedi Dobson by more than eight tenths while Bella Sims and Marie Landreneau also flipped ahead. Huske remained in a distant second place entering the final length, but she came home in 29.39 to run down Dobson and secure the win in 1:57.15. That victory came just over an hour after she topped the 100 fly, having previously won the 200 IM Wednesday.

Dobson came in second in 1:57.38. The University of Georgia standout continued building on her impressive campaign by dropping seven hundredths from her best time. Sims grabbed third in 1:58.54, just ahead of Landreneau (1:58.61).

Men’s 200 Freestyle

As with the women’s 200 freestyle, the winner was a swimmer who trailed for much of the race before an explosive performance on the final length. Henry McFadden, a member of the U.S. men’s 800 free relay at the 2023 and 2025 World Championships, was behind Keaton Jones and Luka Mijatovic through the first half of the race, and he still trailed by two hundredths entering the final length. Then, his closing split of 26.93 turned the race on its head.

McFadden finished in 1:47.34, defeating Jones (1:48.04) by seven tenths. Mijatovic, a day after blasting his best time in the 1500 free by 15 seconds, actually fell to fourth entering the last 50, but he rebounded to finish in 1:48.11, three hundredths ahead of McFadden’s Stanford teammate Ethan Ekk (1:48.13).

Women’s 400 IM

Two best times in one night for Kennedi Dobson, this one by more than five seconds as she dominated the field in the women’s 400 IM. Not long after taking second behind Torri Huske in the 200 free, Dobson jumped on top of the 400 IM final to earn a wire-to-wire victory. Georgia teammate Ieva Maluka closed in on the backstroke leg before Canyons’ Emma Hussein surged on breaststroke, but Dobson’s dominant freestyle helped her pull away.

Dobson finished in 4:43.83, obliterating her previous best time of 4:49.18. Hussein placed second in 4:48.88, her first time under the 4:50-barrier, and Cal’s Kathryn Hazel placed third in 4:49.40. Maluka ended up fourth in 4:49.93.
