Ron Bellamy opens up on his new Michigan football role

by

One of the solid decisions that Kyle Whittingham made once taking over the Michigan football program was retaining former Wolverines wide receiver and receivers coach Ron Bellamy and transitioning him to the front office of the program. Bellamy is no longer an on-field coach and is now the director of player personnel, meaning he has a lot of roles and responsibilities that are more akin to an ambassador for the program. He now touches many elements, from recruiting to the team itself, to donor relations and more.

So, how did Bellamy accept his new role? How did he come to the revelation that he could thrive in this job? He told Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches podcast that he leaned on another former Wolverine who was with the program in 2021, as well as some other prominent voices.

“Yeah, I’ll talk to one of my best friends in ‘Michigan Man,’ Courtney Morgan, talk to him about it,” Bellamy said. “Obviously, he’s never gotten to the coaching world. But he’s a front office guy and just kind of poking and asking him like what are some of the things that I need to look out for? Some of the things that I can grow from?

“It’s just talking to someone, former teammates, and guys that have not many people have done it, right? But just talking to front office guys in the NFL, talking to some of my mentors. Talking to some other guys that’s in the front office within college football. So just picking everyone’s brain and I want to gather as much information as possible in, and like I said, I gather enough information, I felt confident and comfortable to make this decision.”

So what have been the challenges? How is his life different now that he’s the director of player personnel at his alma mater? Bellamy shared how divergent his new role is and how he handles it.

“Just learning a new role,” Bellamy said. “I mean the cool thing about it is, I wouldn’t necessarily say a challenge, as a coach you do a lot of the things that I’m doing now, from working recruiting to eval to having relations with — but like whether it’s your alumni, being a former player here or just your donor relation. Whatever it may be, just having relationships with everyone now is different magnitude, you know? This is extensively the job as opposed to coaching.

“So I would say that’s the biggest challenge for me has been off the field because you’re a player, you’re a coach, you still want to feel like you have that impact on the football field. But it’s just in a different light.”
