Sunday’s Indiana Fever vs. Minnesota Lynx matchup had everything a basketball fan could want. Two red-hot teams locking horns, Lynx rookie phenom Olivia Miles holding her own against Fever superstar Caitlin Clark, and a 108-100 triumph for Minnesota that extended its league-best winning streak to 10 games.
But according to media personality Rachel DeMita, almost none of that became the main conversation afterward, and she’s not afraid to say why.

The WNBA has crossed the midpoint of its 2026 season. The playoffs are just a month away. But surprisingly, most of the headlines so far have had little to do with what’s happening between the lines.
The year opened with wall-to-wall attention on the physical treatment of Clark. Most notably, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas made contact with Clark’s throat during a loose-ball scramble. The WNBA later upgraded Thomas’ foul to a Flagrant 2 and handed her a one-game suspension.
Clark has also drawn criticism away from the court. A recent opinion piece from USA Today’s Nancy Armour accused her of flopping and showing too much emotion during games, adding another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding the Fever star.

That storyline hadn’t even cooled off before Sophie Cunningham‘s comments on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports set off another firestorm.
Her remarks sparked rallies, drawing both supporters and critics outside multiple road arenas. Things escalated further when Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was suspended for five home games and fined after a heated confrontation with two teenage girls who had brought signs supporting Cunningham.
Then came Miles’ comments amid Sunday’s Fever-Lynx matchup. Asked about facing Clark for the first time, she quickly shifted the conversation to Fever star Kelsey Mitchell instead. Her remarks soon became another talking point, overshadowing the game itself.
It’s against that backdrop that DeMita spoke on her “Courtside Club” podcast Monday, and didn’t mince words. The social media influencer argued that the WNBA is being covered more like a “reality show” than a basketball league.

“There’s really not enough people following this league who enjoy basketball because the conversation around this league is never about basketball,” DeMita said. “It’s the anything but basketball league. It’s covered more like a reality show or a political show or whatever than it is of like the basketball happening on the court.”
She contended that the Fever-Lynx clash should have been the main story because of the high-quality basketball on display. But according to DeMita, almost none of that became the focus afterward.
“It was honestly one of the best W games that we’ve had this season … Kelsey Mitchell, Caitlin Clark, Olivia Miles, who’s playing like a seven-year vet as a rookie, Courtney Williams, who went off to basically seal the deal for the Minnesota Lynx. Like that should be the storyline. It’s not,” DeMita continued.
DeMita added that the focus frequently shifts from one controversy to another instead of celebrating what happens on the court.

“All the tweets, all the ESPN notifications I’m getting are not about basketball,” DeMita noted. “… The media, the fans, whoever, will find something to talk about that has nothing to do with basketball … It just jumps from controversial subject to controversial subject over and over and over.”
According to DeMita, there is “no escaping the drama,” which she believes has gone far beyond that of other professional sports leagues over the past few seasons.
DeMita’s frustration comes at a time when the basketball itself has been outstanding.
Clark is putting together a career year, averaging 21.5 points per game while leading Indiana’s playoff push.

Miles has also emerged as one of the league’s brightest young stars. She became the first player in WNBA history to record 400 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists through 22 games.
The No. 2 overall pick has drawn Rookie of the Year buzz while also entering the MVP conversation alongside big names like A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.
Angel Reese, meanwhile, has continued piling up double-doubles. In Monday’s loss to the Las Vegas Aces, she became the first player in Atlanta Dream history to record three straight 20-point, 10-rebound games, recording her 20th double-double of the season.
Those performances have given WNBA fans plenty to talk about on the court. But as DeMita pointed out, they have often taken a back seat to the latest controversies surrounding the league.
