‘Best All-Around Fit’: Texas Tech Gets First 2028 Recruiting Win with OT Commitment

LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech took another step in growing its national recruiting reputation with the highly-touted 2028 offensive tackle Austin Attalah announcing his commitment to the Red Raiders on Tuesday.

Attalah, a native of Orange, Calif., chose Texas Tech over USC and Texas. He is the No. 1-ranked 2028 recruit in California and a top-10 lineman in national rankings by several outlets.

“When I visited Tech back in June, I knew that’s where I wanted to be,” Attalah told Rivals. “I spent two days on campus and really liked it a lot. I loved the coaching staff and the commitment to the football program is very strong.”

If Texas Tech’s Big 12 championship wasn’t indicative enough of the program’s momentum under head coach Joey McGuire and general manager James Blanchard, the team’s high national recruiting rankings are proof that, as Attalah attested to, the Red Raiders are “definitely going in the right direction.”

McGuire reacted to the news on X by posting his signature “#WreckEm” message with a celebratory video of Ric Flair.

The 6-7, 270-pounder Attalah is Texas Tech’s first commitment in the 2028 cycle. The Red Raiders’ 2027 class includes No. 1 overall defensive lineman recruit Jalen Brewster and 5-star linebacker Anthony Sweeney, along with several top offensive prospects such as quarterback Kaivan Bryant, running back SaRod Baker, and receiver Benny Easter Jr.

Brewster endorsed Attalah’s commitment by reposting the news on his Instagram story and adding the caption “welcome”.

“I wasn’t planning to commit this early,” said Attalah, who announced the commitment on ESPN. “Ever since Texas Tech got involved and I took my visit, I just knew that’s where I wanted to be. This wasn’t a spur of the moment of the decision, I’ve been feeling this way for at least the last two months.”

Texas Tech made a late surge in Attalah’s recruitment, and after the prospect explained how he was “tired” of the process, he leaned on his connection with offensive line coach Clay McGuire.

“I have a great relationship with Coach McGuire,” Attalah said. “He’s a great coach, and I’m very comfortable with him. I know he can develop me and help get me to the highest level.

“As I said, the whole staff was great with us,” Attalah added. “Everyone was welcoming, and I loved the campus and the football facilities too. The strength program is elite, and that’s a big thing I was looking for too. I’m very into strength training; it’s a huge part of my routine, and Tech checks off that box as well.

“It was just the best all-around fit, and I’m very happy with my decision.”

In the 2026 recruiting cycle, Texas Tech added 5-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo, who will likely be the immediate backup to senior starter Howard Sampson.
