Division III Albertus Magnus to ‘Pause Indefinitely’ Swim Program
Albertus Magnus, a Division III program in Connecticut, announced this week it will indefinitely pause its swimming and diving program, citing low participation numbers.
Albertus Magnus began a women’s swimming team in 2019 and expanded to a men’s program in 2023. But Its most recent roster shows three female swimmers and one male swimmer, occasioning the pause in the program.
“The addition of swimming and diving, beginning with women’s competition in 2019 and expanding to include men’s competition in 2023, reflected Albertus Magnus College’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes and strengthening participation across our athletics programs,” Director of Athletics Michael Kobylanski said in a press release. “Over the last several years, our swimming and diving student-athletes have represented Albertus with integrity, demonstrated strong academic achievement, and contributed positively to our campus community.
“After careful review and thoughtful consideration, the College determined that sustained low roster numbers since each program’s inception have made it increasingly difficult to provide the competitive environment and overall student-athlete experience that aligns with our expectations and values. While this was not an easy decision, we believe it is the most responsible path at this time. We remain grateful to the student-athletes, coaches, and supporters who helped establish these programs, and should future interest and enrollment demand support renewed viability, the College would welcome the opportunity to revisit swimming and diving in the years ahead.”
The college in New Haven said it will remain committed to student athletes affected by the cuts.
