The Miami Heat may have accidentally revealed plans that had not yet become official.
Fans noticed that the franchise’s official YouTube channel had an introductory press conference for LeBron James scheduled for July 27. The listing described the event as: “@miamiheat Introductory Press conference for LeBron James welcoming him back as a member of the Miami HEAT.”
The scheduled stream quickly fueled speculation that James’ long-awaited free agency decision had already been made behind the scenes. However, there has been no official announcement from either the Heat or James confirming an agreement, and the YouTube listing alone does not establish that a deal has been completed.
The discovery comes just weeks after Miami completed one of the biggest trades in franchise history, acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, multiple future draft picks and a first-round pick swap to Milwaukee in exchange.
According to Anthony Chiang, it was a mistake by the Heat’s social media department while preparing for the possibility of James picking the Heat.
During Antetokounmpo’s introductory press conference, Heat president Pat Riley hinted that Miami’s offseason might not be finished.
Riley recalled receiving a late-night call from general manager Andy Elisburg confirming the Giannis trade.
“We have a deal,” Riley said Elisburg told him. “We both sort of screamed out loud, ‘Yeah, we landed the plane.’ Now, there’s another one we have to land.”
When asked whether he was referring to the 24-year veteran widely believed to be James, Riley declined to identify the player.
“As far as the 24-year veteran, that is something that would happen organically,” Riley said. “You never know that you’re ever going to win a title until you win one. But you’ll never win one if you don’t have the talent and the coaching to do it.”
Miami’s pursuit of another marquee player has been a major storyline throughout the offseason. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst previously identified the Heat as the strongest basketball fit for James because of the opportunity to play alongside Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo while sharing ball-handling responsibilities. Kendrick Perkins also connected Riley’s “another one to land” remark to the possibility of a James reunion.
James, however, has shown no urgency in making his decision. His longtime agent, Rich Paul, recently emphasized that the four-time NBA champion will decide on his own timetable despite growing speculation.
“He has a choice to make. He has a business choice to make,” Paul said. “We’re not going to sit here and decide or allow someone else to decide when he makes that decision.”
Paul also dismissed reports claiming James had already selected his next team.
“These people don’t know anything,” Paul said. “I don’t know when his choice is going to be made. It could be 48 seconds. It could be 48 minutes.”
The Heat are attempting to rebound from a 43-39 season that ended with the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference before reshaping the roster around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. Adebayo averaged 20.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists while earning All-Defensive honors in 2025-26, and Andrew Wiggins contributed 15.4 points per game while shooting 41.4% from three-point range.
