Nick Saban was very successful with recruiting a ton of talent to the Alabama Crimson Tide football program when he was the head coach. Saban won many national titles during his coaching career and also had many players drafted into the NFL. Things are a lot different with Saban no longer on the sidelines. Alabama has done some nice things with Kalen DeBoer as head coach of the program, but there are bigger issues ahead with the college football landscape and sports in general.

NIL has been a major talking point in the Senate and amongst college sports analysts. The recruiting and the transfer portal on a year-to-year basis is out of control. A lot of programs have more money than others. Hopefully, things can get settled down at some point, but it remains to be seen.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide HC Nick Saban Testifies in Senate About NIL Trajectory
March 30, 2026; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Nick Saban greets members of the Stone Building Company crew who are building the Saban Center at the Topping Out ceremony.
Saban was speaking to the Senate about the potentially dangerous trajectory college sports is on with the current NIL rules that are in place. He said,
“It’s become an arms race, who spends the most has got the best chance to win. But I think it’s a race to the bottom because if you don’t spend to win, you lose your fan base and you don’t have any revenue.”
A lot of people acknowledge the competitive challenges with NIL in college sports today. Saban’s good friend, Kirby Smart, also acknowledged that his Georgia Bulldogs football program isn’t the same it once was because of NIL. He knows that the BIG10 Conference is better than the SEC Conference at the moment. It will be interesting to see what Saban, the Senate, and others will want to decide with NIL in the forseeable future.
