Yaxel Lendeborg admitted Sunday’s Summer League championship victory over Cameron Boozer carried extra meaning after an earlier meeting during the college season.
Boozer, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, led the Memphis Grizzlies with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
His late third-quarter three-pointer helped Memphis build a 10-point advantage before Lendeborg sparked Golden State’s comeback.
The Grizzlies still had opportunities to reclaim the lead in the closing moments, but Boozer missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer before Olivier-Maxence Prosper turned the ball over on an inbound pass.
After the game, Lendeborg credited the Warriors’ composure while taking a playful jab at their opponents.
“Their butts got tight,” the player said. “They puckered up. Some of us are built for the moment and some aren’t. … Our spirit, our will, our desire to not lose is pretty much what helped us out.”
The win also served as personal redemption for Lendeborg after Boozer’s Duke team defeated Michigan during the NCAA season.
“I think about [revenge] every time I play [Boozer],” Lendeborg said. “Every game we play, them refs be saving him. … It is a competitive nature [with] everybody that gets drafted ahead of me.”
