“The NCAA has agreed to reduce Arion Carter’s suspension from 2 games to 1. While I strongly agree with Josh Heupel’s comment about how ridiculous this is in our current environment, 1 game is better than 2. If players around the country are allowed to leave NFL camps and play college football, the NCAA should do the right thing and drop it all altogether. This is yet another example of applying archaic rules from another era, without evolving and, most importantly, putting student-athletes’ experiences above bureaucracy. Arion doesn’t deserve this unnecessary distraction. He is everything that is right about college sports, a team leader who has already earned his degree,” Danny White said on X.

This Punishment Still Isn’t Fair to Arion Carter

The Tennessee Volunteers linebacker being suspended just one game is an improvement, but this is definitely out of line with where the NCAA currently stands within the playing field of eligibility. As we currently discuss this topic, the Tennessee Volunteers will be without one of their best players, who took caution when it comes to even giving the plane ticket money back to the agent, while there are legitimate professional players returning to college after suiting up in this year’s preseason.
This is unacceptable and still feels unfair for the Tennessee Vols linebacker. In fact, the SEC released a message on the situation of NFL players returning to play college football, and they, like many others, are strongly against that being allowed.

“College Athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college. Allowing that to occur will blur the line between college and professional sports, create significant competitive equity concerns, and reduce opportunities for high school and current college athletes. College sports are for college athletes. The current confusion around national eligibility standards emphasizes the need to advance the Protect College Sports Act,” the SEC said in a statement.
While this isn’t ideal, it is still a lesser punishment, which is obviously better, but it isn’t right.
