LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin Facing Potential SEC Punishment

Lane Kiffin has never been one to bite his tongue.

The newly hired LSU Tigers head coach has a reputation for stirring the pot cand drumming up controversy almost on a weekly basis.

Kiffin now finds himself potentially in hot water as the SEC mulls over whether or not to fine Kiffin for comments he made recently about his former school Ole Miss in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

Because his comments caused a public uproar, Kiffin could be subject to potential discipline from the SEC. A fine is the likeliest punishment, but the SEC could simply slap him on the wrist as well.

“Officials at Ole Miss and the SEC have spoken about a potential reprimand for new LSU coach Lane Kiffin over comments he made in a recent Vanity Fair magazine interview, two people close to the situation tell USA TODAY Sports,” Matt Hayes reported.

“… Any potential sanctions against Kiffin — a public reprimand, a fine or both — will likely be further discussed this week as the SEC kicks off the most contentious and future-critical spring meetings in conference history.”

In that Vanity Fair interview, Kiffin claimed that the school’s ties to confederate symbols (its nickname is the Rebels) and polarizing history with racial issues made it difficult to land some of the nation’s top recruits.

He also pointed out that he didn’t have that issue at LSU.

“That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” Kiffin said. “Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.’”

Kiffin defended his comments in a statement to USA Today, alleging what he said was not being framed in the proper context.

“People don’t read the actual words I used in the article,” Kiffin said. “I said, ‘A parent said.’ That’s not me saying it as my opinion.”

Kiffin has been fined three times during his college coaching career.

He was hit with a $5,000 fine back in 2019 at FAU for criticizing the officiating crew in the Owls’ game against Marshall by tweeting a gif about the poor job they were doing.

Kiffin was fined $25,000 in October of 2020 at Ole Miss for critical comments made about referees discussing plays that weren’t reviewed during his team’s loss to Auburn. He was hit again with another $25,000 fine two months later for making even more disparaging remarks about SEC officiating.
