Entering his second full starting season, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season, still has plenty to clean up, which has been the job of new OC Holmon Wiggins and first-year QB coach Joey Lynch this offseason, and after five practices, the redshirt junior continues to put together consistent, impressive outings.
Still, the proof is in the pudding, and playing behind four new offensive line starters will more than likely determine if Reed can match his 2025 production, but as I state above, so far, so good. On Tuesday, Holmon Wiggins, who will call plays for the first time in his coaching career, discussed Marcel Reed’s progress this fall, noting the veteran signal-caller’s “command of the offense” while playing with the confidence needed to take another step in his development.

Before making his way to College Station before the 2024 season, Holmon Wiggins served as Nick Saban’s longtime WR coach and assistant head coach, bringing a wealth of knowledge while developing future Heisman Trophy winner and current Philadelphia Eagles receiver DaVonta Smith. Wiggins stated on Tuesday that his coaching style and scheme will emphasize the roster’s playmakers, especially the Aggies’ loaded wide receiver rotation.
“Now, you see him doing some stuff and actually taking more command of the offense because there’s a more understanding of what it is. And I think a lot of that comes with experience and also time on the job.”
Plenty of former SEC quarterbacks come to mind when analyzing the importance of second full starting seasons under center, knowing an offense top to bottom, and playing with more consistency late in the season, which Reed has yet to accomplish after A&M’s back-to-back losses to Texas A&M and Miami in the CFP.
While dropping back and delivering strikes in the pocket is where Marcel Reed must improve, his ability on the run, specifically rolling out in play action, will continue to be an emphasis under Wiggins, notably against defenses looking to send a ton of pressure early and often.
I think a lot of defenses has seen how athletic the quarterback is, right? For us, that gives us the ability to be able to put him on the perimeter, kind of change the launch point, especially for defenses that try to tee off on us.”
Marcel Reed doesn’t need to play like a Heisman finalist for the Aggies to finish 10-2, or, at worst, 9-3 this season, and in order to cut down his turnover numbers and play, yes, with more consistency, it’s up to Holmon Wiggins to unleash his QB and tailor the play calling to his dual-threat skill set.
